At least they named their source, right?

From Salon.com's new blog, The War Room '04:

Kerry's joint appearance

CNN's "Inside Politics" just ran a video clip of John Kerry at a campaign event where Kerry pretends to be smoking a joint. The tape was provided to CNN by the Republican National Committee, Judy Woodruff said. She didn't explain a lot about why CNN chose to run it, nor did she give much background about the tape.

But here's a description of the actual event from the CBS News reporter assigned to Kerry. It took place on Jan. 6 in Iowa, when Kerry was campaigning with his old friend Pete Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary.

"... aides were shaking their heads after a Yarrow-inspired scene turned out a little weird. At a house party thrown by Story County Democrats, Yarrow summoned Kerry to the living room where he had just started playing 'Puff the Magic Dragon.' At one point, as Yarrow sang the word 'puff,' Kerry quickly gestured as if he was smoking pot."

Maybe the RNC is worried about Kerry's apparent rise in the Iowa polls.

The LIe Factory

Mother Jones has a scary, though not surprising story about the maufacture of lies in the Bush Administration.

Molly's new favorite Bushism

Molly replaces her longstanding champion Bushism with a poignant cry reported by Paul O'Neill.

Next the WHO'll be saying creationism isn't a valid theory

When I see the headline Bush administration challenges science in obesity report, I immediately ask, "What industry are they protecting this time? Sure enough, when you read the story, you realize this has to do with fast foods, etc., and that it has to do with ideologically driven drivel about individual responsibility.

Why Dana Millbank doesn't get called on at press conferences

I missed this piece about a year ago, but found it through Eric Alterman's Altercation. Besides being quite relevant to the O'Neill flap, it's hilarious: where else do you find quotations from Moscow Show Trials and A Fish Named Wanda together?

These folks can't catch any breaks

Let's see if there's a hot invesigation to chase down the "Bush administration officials" who provided the news that Hussein Warned Iraqis to Beware Outside Fighters. The way administration claims about the reasons for war keep getting kicked out from under them, I can't help picturing W. as Wiley Coyote as he realizes he's run off the cliff.

Paul O'Neill, Unplugged, or What Would Alexander Hamilton Have Done?

Lost in the smoke and mud of the latest Washington tempest is confirmation that the Bushies resemble Plato's rendering of the sophists: say whatever helps you win, the greater good be damned.

Some leaks are more equal than others

The folks at Center for American Progress note some telling contrasts between the reaction to O'Neill's alleged leaks of classified information and other alleged (or confirmed) leaks.
